Our story begins back in 2015 when our founder, John Smith, was frustrated with the lack of good options for securing his farm’s gates. The flimsy, cheap locks on the market just didn’t cut it. John’s farm is his livelihood, so protecting his equipment, livestock and property from theft and intruders is paramount.

After doing ample research and testing many different lock designs, John came up with his first Gatemate prototype – a lock that was both long-lasting and hard to break or cut through. Fast forward to today, and Gatemate® has grown into a trusted brand known for heavy-duty gate locks that deliver exceptional security and durability.

Thumbturn Locks

Our thumbturn locks utilize a simple thumb-twist mechanism for smooth, convenient locking and unlocking. No key required. These locks are ideal for low-medium security residential and commercial gates. We offer single-sided and double-sided deadbolt options.

Keyed Alike Locks

Our most popular locks, keyed alike deadbolts allow multiple gates to be unlocked with the same standard key. Available with single or double cylinders. Ideal for securing multiple access points on commercial, industrial or residential properties.

Keyed Different Locks

For maximum security across multiple gates, our keyed different locks have unique key combinations. While a little less convenient, this prevents a single stolen key from compromising all gates. We offer an array of master keying options.

Double Keyed Locks

For high-risk security areas, double keyed locks require a key to unlock the lock from both sides – preventing easy tampering. We offer these in both keyed alike and keyed different configurations.

Long Throw Locks

Our long throw locks have an extra-long 1.5″ deadbolt throw for maximum strength. The extended bolt is harder to cut or pry open. Available keyed alike, keyed different or double keyed.

Combination Locks

For keyless convenience, check out our dial combination locks. Program your own unique combo for smooth, reliable gate security without keys. We offer single dial, double dial and push button combinations.

Commercial Locks

Our Story

Gatemate® Lock was founded in 2015 by John Smith, a third generation locksmith. After becoming frustrated with the lack of quality gate locks available, John set out to design locks that offered exceptional security without breaking the bank.

The first Gatemate® lock – the original Extra Long Hardened Steel Padlock – was born in John’s home garage after months of design and testing. This robust, hardened steel padlock with a 1.5” hardened shackle set a new standard for strength, security, and quality in gate locks.

John spent weekends installing these first heavy-duty Gatemate® locks at his local farmer’s market. Word about these ultra-tough new locks soon spread among John’s network of locksmiths, contractors and hardware stores. Online sales soon followed.

Buoyed by this positive feedback and demand, John expanded the Gatemate® lock lineup to include keyed, combination and keyless locks in multiple sizes and configurations. At the same time, he moved production from his garage into a small machinist workshop to ramp up manufacturing.

In 2018, the Gatemate® brand took a major leap forward when John partnered with a US-based commercial lock manufacturer to take Gatemate® into full-scale production using state-of-the-art automated manufacturing. This allowed Gatemate® locks to be produced efficiently while retaining strict quality control and maintaining competitive pricing.

Today, Gatemate® offers the widest range of US-made heavy-duty gate locks on the market, with over 50 lock variants to meet virtually any gate security need. We continue to innovate by taking customer feedback into account and incorporating the latest in lock technology into our engineering.

John Smith – Founder, CEO

With over 25 years as a locksmith and security professional, John brings deep expertise in lock engineering and design. He leads the Gatemate® team with a hands-on, customer-centric approach. When he’s not at the office, you can find John outdoors with his family and dogs.

Elizabeth Clark – COO

Elizabeth keeps day-to-day operations running smoothly as our Chief Operating Officer. With a background in manufacturing and quality control, she ensures production efficiency while maintaining Gatemate’s high standards. In her free time, Elizabeth enjoys competitive clay shooting.

Chris Brown – Lead Engineer

Chris leads our engineering and R&D efforts, overseeing product design and managing Gatemate’s stable of patents. He earned his Mech Eng degree from Virginia Tech and is constantly innovating to enhance Gatemate’s locks. Chris is an avid rock climber and hiker.

Jane Thomas – Marketing Director

As our Marketing Director, Jane manages branding, advertising and public relations for Gatemate®. She has over a decade of experience in security product marketing. In her spare time, Jane enjoys traveling the world and photography.

Alex Rodriguez – Sales Manager

Alex heads up our sales initiatives, building relationships with vendors, distributors and stores to expand Gatemate’s sales channels. He has been in security sales for over 15 years. Alex stays active with his family by coaching little league.
